The Best of Byron Bay: 18 Things to Do in this Surf Haven
In the northeastern end of New South Wales lies a coastal haven that draws the free-spirited and the seekers of salt-sprayed adventures – Byron Bay. This bohemian gem, cradled between the lush hinterland and the turquoise waves of the Australian coastline, captivates the souls of more than 2 million tourists every year. Not only is it the perfect destination for surfing, but its energy is also great for those who just want to come visit for a little reset.
1. Cape Byron Lighthouse & Walking Track
Begin your day atop the cliffs, ideally at sunrise, where the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse stands tall over the ocean. The Cape Byron Walking Track, with its panoramic views of both the Pacific and hinterland, sets the stage for a day of wandering as the sun stretches across the horizon.
2. Surf at the Pass
Head to The Pass, Byron’s iconic surf spot! Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a novice seeking the thrill of the ocean, catching a wave at this renowned location is an obligatory rite of passage.
3. Try all the cafes
Awaken your taste buds in pretty much any of Byron's cafes. From the earthy vibes of Folk to the health-conscious offerings at Combi, each cafe contributes a unique chapter to Byron's culinary scene. Bayleaf, Jimmy's Coffee, The General Store, Canteen, Top Shop, and Masa are all worth a visit.
4. Watch Sunset on the Main Beach
As the day concludes, Byron’s Main Beach usually transforms into a pastel canvas. Grab a spot in the grass where there are usually musicians showcasing their talent, and watch the sky transform into a breathtaking sunset composed of pink, orange, and sometimes purple tones. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to capture any good photos of the sunset, so instead here are some photos of the actual beach, which is usually busier than most other beaches around Byron. It’s a great place to meet people and enjoy a little tanning session.
5. Explore the Bar Scene & Nightlife
At nighttime, Byron Bay's vibrant nightlife takes centre stage. From the elevated elegance of The Loft (where I highly recommend trying the salted caramel espresso martini) to the lively pub atmosphere of Beach Hotel, the pulsating energy of Casa Luna, the colourful atmosphere at the Balcony and the wild parties at Lovers Lane, each of these venues offers a unique experience.
6. Get Your Tan on at Belongil Beach
For a relaxed afternoon, Belongil Beach is your sanctuary. It is way less crowded than the main beach and is frequented by local residents and their cute dogs!
7. Visit Broken Head Nature Reserve
Embark on an adventure through the untamed beauty of Broken Head Nature Reserve. The Three Sisters Walking Track unveils dramatic coastal views, and will ultimately lead you to Kings Beach.
8. Spend a Lazy Afternoon at Stone & Wood Brewery
If you’re a beer drinker who enjoys visiting local breweries, or if you happen to be in Byron on a rainy day, Stone & Wood Brewery is the perfect way to spend your afternoon with friends.
9. Go Visit the Animals at the Farm
Discover The Farm, a special place that goes way beyond a regular farm. Here, you can enjoy tasty food at their restaurant, Three Blue Ducks. Treat yourself to delicious ice cream from Baylato Byron, pick up fresh flowers from Poppy & Fern, and get local products from Byron Fermentary. Don't forget to say hi to the animals – there are pigs and rams waiting to meet you. It's not just a farm; it's a cozy spot where nature, people, and good eats come together for a wonderful experience.
10. Enjoy a Glass of Gin & Tonic at Cape Byron Distillery
Cape Byron Distillery invites you to savour the botanical delights it has to offer. Raise a glass of one of their exquisite cocktails amid the lush greenery, or opt for one of their tasting options.
11. Venture North to Brunswick Heads
Head north to the charming town of Brunswick Heads. With inviting beaches and a laid-back authenticity, this town welcomes you to embrace its coastal lifestyle. If you’re hungry, make sure to enjoy a delicious breakfast burger at Old Maids, or a nice dinner at Saint Maries. It was very rainy when I visited so I didn’t get a chance to explore the beautiful beach nor the river, but I have heard that it is an amazing place to go do some stand-up paddle. If you have time, make a detour to Mullumbimby, a quaint town located nearby that is known for its spa, its shopping and its beautiful parks.
12. Venture South to Ballina & Lennox Head
The southern stretch reveals the long and stunning beach of Lennox Head – the perfect spot for a laid-back day under the sun. If you’re there early morning and get hungry, check out Shelter, their food is amazing! Not far from Lennox Head lies the town of Ballina, home to Byron’s airport, a stunning beach and two delightful cafes: The Belle General and Shelly Beach Cafe.
13. Visit Killen Falls & Newrybar
A short journey from Byron Bay leads you to hidden treasures like Killen Falls and the village of Newrybar. The cascading waters of Killen Falls offer a refreshing nature escape. In Newrybar, lose yourself in its rustic charm and perhaps indulge in local delicacies, adding an extra layer of flavour to your Byron Bay stay.
14. Enjoy Tallow Beach
Enjoy the soothing rhythm of the waves at Tallow Beach. This expansive stretch of shoreline invites you to unwind, or go for a surf, depending on how you’re feeling. Most people usually gather around the Cosy Corner, which is usually more protected from the wind.
15. Go Shopping in Town
Dive into the heart of Byron Bay's vibrant town, where eclectic shops and boutiques line the streets. From bohemian chic to surf-inspired styles, the town's shopping scene mirrors its diverse spirit. Whether you're seeking unique souvenirs or the latest in fashion trends, you’re certain to find something you like in Byron.
16. Admire the Street Art
Wander through the streets to discover Byron's street art scene. You’ll find some beautiful murals including that big blue whale on Lawson Street.
17. Eat Out at Restaurants
Probably my favourite part of the trip! Don’t expect to go to Byron and be on a diet; this would be pure torture. With so many options to choose from, Byron’s culinary scene is one of the best in the country. Treehouse, Bang Bang, Moonlight Japanese, No Bones, Miss Margarita, and the Mez Club are some of my personal favourites.
18. Spend the Day in Wategos
Conclude your Byron Bay escapade with a blissful day at Wategos Beach, a little paradise of crystal-clear waters nested in between two hills. Make sure to book lunch at Raes on Wategos for a Mediterranean-like gastronomic experience like no other.
